How to Care for a Venus Fly Trap: Remove the Dome
If you recently purchased a Venus Flytrap and are not sure if you should keep the plastic dome on it or take it off, here is the guide for you.
The answer is simple: Always remove any plastic dome from the plant.
You may have to do this gradually over a period of a few days as the plant will have acclimated to the higher humidity. Lift the cup more and more each day until it is ultimately off after a week or so. While these plants love higher humidity levels (can reach more than 50% in their natural habitat), too much in a stagnant environment will have adverse effects.

Some nurseries will put these little cups over plants to help them stay fresh while sitting on store shelves; However, no experienced carnivorous plant grower would recommend using one. This is because it has been proven to be ineffective and even detrimental by professionals. Venus flytraps grown and sold with plastic domes tend to be softer, weaker, and more prone to pests and diseases than traditionally grown. This is usually an indication of an amateur grower or big-box seller and should be considered a warning sign when shopping for carnivorous plants.
A novice will often continue to use the same method of care on their new flytrap without understanding how detrimental these conditions are towards healthy specimens. And may become perplexed when their venus flytrap becomes sick or starts to die off.
